job is done. i found a 29mm deep socket at pep boys, sold as a spindle
nut socket for a ford fiesta and other mini-mobiles.

cody's description mentioned the use of a 3/8" stubby ratchet wrench,
but if you don't have a stubby wrench, you can do the job by disconnecting
the intake hose (intercooler to throttle body and idle stabilizer control)
and using a regular ratchet wrench with a short extension.

i also replaced the after-run thermoswitch, which was leaking.

i didn't lose much coolant in the process, since i was able to quickly
plug the opening with my finger after removing the thermoswitch. i
made sure the replacement parts were nearby, and i don't think i lost
more than 1 or 2 tablespoons of coolant in the process.

replacing the MTFS switch seems to have worked, as the gauge no longer
abruptly plunges to zero. however, normal operating temperature seems
to be a bit lower on the gauge than it was before, so i guess the
calibrations aren't quite the same. too bad i don't have one of those
real gauges with numbers on it.
