I'm looking at the pan that the oil drain plug is in.  I always just called=
 this an oil pan gasket.  The pan is angled and the side that is furthest f=
rom the ground is where the leak is.  My concern is what all has to be remo=
ved to drop the pan?  I could not tell what all was connected or obstructin=
g last night.  I will try to get a better look today but would appreciate a=
ny hints.  I don't have a Bentley manual yet.

Just changed my 93 S4 over to Amsoil. Seemed to run much better for the
first couple hundred miles. Got home this evening and smelled oil burning.
Looked underneath to see the dreaded puddle. Thought it was the crush ring
not seated. Turns out the Amsoil must have "cleaned up" the old sludge
around the pan gasket. I guess the stories are true about changing a higher
mileage engine (102k) over to synthetic. Looking at the oil pan, I can't
tell what all would have to be taken off to change the gasket. Tried
tightening down the allen screws that I could get to with no luck. It's
leaking from the part that is higher up on the motor. Does this make sense?
How big of a repair am I looking at? Any BTDT? TIA. Brian
