Paul.:
You accomplished your task of adding an oil cooler to your system. That
*can* be a good thing. You are free to do what you want to do. I only
looked at your pic, and made some suggestions in the most politically correct
way I could. You can disagree with me, AND you can/should buy Carroll
Smith's books. I did a long ago, and have more oil cooler installs than I
care to count. I did my first one when I was 18 (78 scirocco), and I had
more concerns about the design 25years ago than what I observed from your
photo yesterday.

WRT this list and these cars specifically, I offer that you have taken a
major step back in design from what audi delivered from the factory. From
isolation, to placement, to lines and orientation. Oil is the lifeline of
your I5, all "modifications" to it shouldn't be with any "tunnel vision" of
just reducing the pointer on a bad guage. It appears to me that's exactly
what you did.

The ensuing banter from the thread isn't my interest, increasing risk of
failure is. I take no offense to your posts, I'd only advocate that your
opinions and execution is contrary to the accepted practice of sound oil
cooler installation/modification/design. If you want my btdt, I gave it to
you. If you want my references to it: Carroll Smith.

Scott Justusson

The top of the cooler is below the sump.

I don't buy your thermostat hypothisis, if you don't believe the stock oil
guage (I realize that it's indicated 134 may not be an actual 130), then
maybe we should install VDO oil temp guages. In that case, all of our guages
are probably a bit off, so I think I will rip out my IC cluster and install
VDO speed, revs, oil press, oil temp, coolant temp, boost, and hell doesn't
VDO make a clock too?

I must say that I would rather have stainless lines, and this may be an
upgrade in the future. I do pay an incredible amount of attention to my
cars, and maintainance is my hobby. I am one of the most picky people when
it comes to this car, just ask my friend who installed the cooler.

I know you are just trying to help, that's fine. I just disagree with some
of your points. No big deal, no offense taken, and I hope vise-versa.

Paul
