Hi Dan,
My S6 did the same thing 3 months ago. Fortunately a
friend in the P car club came to my rescue when I
limped it into his yard. The clutch master cylinder
rod and clevis snapped between the two adjustment
bolts. I took it out in about 20 minutes. Use a can ,
to catch brake fluid, as your brake fluid reservoir
will drain out all over your nice interior carpet when
you disconnect it. Here's my elCheapo fix; I then had
the two nuts tack welded together, bolted it back in,
and have been going fine ever since. Make sure you
pressure bleed your clutch or it won't work.
The more expensive method, probably safer bet, is to
spend the $100+ dollars on the new clutch cylinder.
I'm just a frugal Yankee. When she breaks again, time
for a new cylinder!

Yes there is, the so-calle "over-centre spring", but
my gut tells me
that your clutch MC is done. If you have air in the MC
you'll get
exactly the same pedal behaviour, although the
over-centre spring will
be still intact.
Once there, do yourself a favour and replace all three
components: the
MC, the slave and the rubber pressure hose. For
bleeding you'll need a
pressure bleeder. The clutch sys is impossible to
bleed via
conventional
means.
Gentlemen, I hope you don't forget to bleed your
clutches at least once
a year, when you bleed brakes. See what happens...
