Lee,
Early S4's should do fine in the conditions you've mentioned.
I've not found the clutch to be a weak link at all. Both of my cars
have the original clutch, one has 104k and the other has 145k miles.
One of my pals is pushing 190k on his S6 with the original clutch.
However, all of these vehicles are stock. If you're dealing with a
vehicle that has been modified to add 100+hp, you'll start finding the
'weak links in the chain'.

Dealing with Atlanta's famous traffic you'll need to watch for a couple
of common problems. The car has two electrical fans. As long as both
are running, you'll stay cool. This system (including switches, relays,
etc) can get a little flaky. If the 2nd fan doesn't kick in then the
car protects itself by turning off the AC compressor. The compressor IS
an item that might require replacement in a high mileage car.

Good luck,

Hi everyone,

I am currently looking for a car and am considering the early S4's.
Unfortunately, I know almost nothing about these cars at all. Well, I
know what they are & what they are capable of, but not what to look for
when considering a purchase.

I learned this the hard way 5 years ago when I bought my 88 M3. I
didn't know much about what to look for, & it cost me big, and I lucked
out--nothing big was wrong with the car, just tons of small stuff.
Anyway, that's past now & the car is very well behaved & a treasured
possesion.

That being said, I don't want to repeat this scenario. I am looking for
information on the S4's. For instance, is this car reliable enough to
be driven daily, in gridlock, with 100degree heat? Is this car easy for
DIYer's? I have seen the information on UrS4.com & s-cars.org about a
pre-purchase checklist, but would like more information, maybe even
someone in the Atlanta area who could help me, or a recommendation for a
reputable shop in this area. One of the things that, of course,
concerns me is the possible issue with the early transmission whine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Lee Robinson
