Given the know how, could ecu software accomplish the same thing? I guess
that would be the Feico V dream of in dash Ipaq computer.
So, the apexi acts as a governor just to keep from rocketing from hill to
hill in daily driving? You must bring this to Chicago so that I may be
baptized and come to understand that size does matter:)
Bill
Yes, governor would be an appropriate description. The other benefit is that
I can(well, Peter Tsai can) custom build boost maps for each gear of the
transmission. This allows me to detune things for 1st and 2nd gear and go
crazy in the rest. This was especially important when I had the stock 5
speed. I had the boost limited to 14.5 lbs in 1st and 20 lbs in 2nd gear.
With the CRB I run 20 lbs in 1st and I taper the boost in all gears. The
tapering is to ease the boost as I approach redline. It starts at 6000 rpm
and reduces boost to 20 lbs at 7500 rpm. Given the volumetric potential of
this turbo it could give 26 lbs to redline. I don't know what its capable of
but I did see 32 lbs after I fixed a leak.
Another benefit of lowered boost is lower charge air temps. The difference of
a turbo operating at 80% efficiency vs 100%+ for highly boosted K-24s and
RS2s is significant. And, that doesn't take into account the big Happersize
FMIC I run. My intake temps are only 1-2 degrees above ambient. Part of this
is due to the size and efficiency of the 4.25"x10"x24" Garrett aircraft
quality core and part of it is the lower turbo discharge temp because of the
reduced efficiency percentage.
I don't know if I can get my car to ORD but if you make the trip to a CO
s-car mafia gathering you will be enlightened. Brian Billotti came here this
spring for a tech session and is now consumed with a FMIC installation. He
thought his 2Bennett water sprayed I/C was the cat's meow until he had a
chance to drive Mike P's and my car. Those Davtron temp readouts made him a
believer.
Hap, staying cool in Evergreen(in more ways than one), Maguire
