Morning-
Ah, Friday morning lazy banter...
Bruce hit it Taka, confidence and limits will increase with time. I'm the
same Bruce, in my daily flogger, I fling her @ 9/10ths. Never further.
Seldom less. Hmmm... wonder if there's a correlation to being able to do
that on the track and doing it on daily commutes, back roads, etc. day in
day out year in year out. Hmmm... (safely of course). Though that's prolly
more like 8/10ths.
Realistically, my point is, make every turn count. Make every shift count.
Make every braking count. Always. Good practice. The world is my track.
It all translates into knowing you and your car when it matters, on the
track, and being able to hang with some 'bigger boys', BTDT.
How many frickin' events, er driver's ed events you manage to hit a year
Bruce?!?!?!?!!? I hate you. Though, I think I've already told you that!
What's your secret? OK, I know step one: get warranty. Check. Step 2:
Obtain clearance from wife... typically not an issue, though kid in a month
will likely force a sabbatical. Do'ah. Step 3: install 6 spee...

I hear you on the daily driver syndrome. Just do another ten events, like I
did this summer, and get an extended warranty (hiya Paul K!), and then
you'll fling her around like a wild man. But true, I do need to drive home,
so I'm always keeping a tiny (keyword: tiny) something in reserve.
A stock Miata or other light, well balanced car is ideal to learn in, and
needs no modifications (maybe upgraded pads/fluid). You can learn car
control, handling at the limits, etc. I scared myself silly in a 90 HP 1100
lb Formula Ford at Lime Rock when I took the Skip Barber course.
I'd recommend you get a car you can afford to fix up and keep on going, but
I'd ditch the thought that you can "afford" to crash it! :)
You'll know when you need more car from your comfort level at the limits of
whatever car you start in.
