I too use the barbaric method. You also need to put pressure on the piston
with a c-clamp while turning. Not hard to do but if you have access to the
special tool I'm sure it's easier.

I may be a barbarian but I turned my pistons back in using channel lock
pliers. Just make sure you don't injure the rubber seals. And turn counter
clockwise. It is a PITA if you turn them the wrong way.
