Hello chaps, my name is Paul and I use Antiseize!
What a relief to get that off my chest. For years, I thought I was the only
one, but now it turns out that dozens (well several anyway) of you regularly
use antiseize on your wheel nuts and other bits. Like a couple of others, I
started using it after a bad experience with a rusted-on wheel. I thought I
stood a good chance of shearing the bolts and then I had to get VERY violent
with the wheel to break it loose.
Now I routinely use Molyslip Copaslip on any fastening that I found
difficult to get off.
I don't use it on spark plugs as there are so many dire warnings about this
- BUT - my spark plugs keep coming loose and need regular retorqueing.
Before you all leap in and claim my torque wrench isn't calibrated, yes it
is (or rather it was a couple of years ago).
I just had a look at Molyslip's website and they claim:
"Where to use Copaslip:
In any assembly process: Copaslip reduces nut driving torque requirements
compared to oil or grease In addition to greatly increasing the ease of
dismantling. Use as a lubricant behind disc brake pads to reduce squeal, on
pivot points and adjusters; on manifold, muffler and pipe bolts and
connections; spark plug threads and cylinder head bolts"
Interestingly, they don't specify using it on wheel bolts (although a
Canadian website does - http://www.wintech.net.cn/english/copaslip.htm)
I think Scott's recommendations are the only ones you could (in conscience)
make to anyone - they also have the backings of all the car manufacturers
and writers of workshop manuals. As for the rest of us, well, antiseize
works for us. (In another few weeks, they'll be putting salt on the roads
again. I'm sure there's a conspiracy between the road sprayers and car
manufacturers - "We're not selling enough cars in Worcestershire - double
salt on the A435 this November.")
I also feel I should own up to nearly having a wheel come off once - in my
case nothing to do with hot/cold/antiseize/studs/bolts - I just forgot to
torque it up after hand tightening it.
I feel better now!
Paul
