[s-cars] Clicking noise when a/c compressor is on

All the gremlins seem to come out when it's cold...

I heard a clicking noise coming from the hood ('93 S4) that increased in
frequency with the RPM's.  It almost sounded like noisy valves; which
concerned me.  However, I noticed the a/c compressor was on and when I turn
it off, the sound stops (which is mildly relieving).

Question, has anyone had an a/c compressor go bad?  Did you notice any such
noise?
