I feel obliged to answer this one since I had exactly the same problem for
the last two years and just recently finally buckled down to solve the
problem. I had help from listmembers Chad Clark, Chad Tobin, and Scott
Mockry. Thanks guys. I bought a used module from Chris Semple which has
been working flawlessly.
This is a problem with '92s only apparently.
First, put the window relay back in (the big one in the footwell that you
removed.) Then replace the module that is encased in foam beside the
battery. This is the one that has the vacuum pump built-in. It is the
module that controls interior lights, alarm, windows, retained accessory
power, IR remote and door locks. It goes nuts and causes this problem. The
part to get to replace it is out of the later cars, part number 4A0 862 257J

I am pretty sure this will solve your problem. Keep in mind too that you
will have to relearn the key fobs when you install the new module.
