Indeed,
My personal experience correlates with Mike.
Skinny snows rule in the mountains! Skiers take note.
My S4 came with Conti 225-50 X 16's snows, and they were TOO damn wide. Car=
swims around like a loose goose on ice, off they come. And I find 205-50 X=
16's mounted on 16 X 8 rims are also on the wide side because the 8 inch r=
im pulls the sidewall way out.
You have to select your application and choose to meet it. If you're in CT,=
NYC or Virginia running around on wide snows or all seasons for that matte=
r probably works because there's not much snow, and if there IS a big storm=
, flat landers stay home!

But Mike is right, venture into Franconia or Pinkham notch NH, or Jay Peak =
VT in January and the weather changes dramatically. Typically blowing drift=
ing snow, the 195's are the ticket. Suburban weather is mild by comparision=
 and leads to false security.

Last spring, whilst in Germany, I read a rave review in a German car mag th=
at exclaimed the manifold joys of the 'new' Dunlop Wintersport M3's . I'll =
dig it out at home and post the review. Sadly Tirerack only lists one size =
on the web site today, a new intro to the US market. This tire is worth con=
sidering, if supply can be located.

PS: Mike, the only guy I know who might accept your snowy passing lane chal=
lenge is Jeff Montgomery, in North Conway. Drives a 1986 5KTQ with skinny N=
RW's .

years I only buy one snow tire. Nokia Hakkapaletta. My
S6 avant, and many prior Audi quattros, runs 15" steel
wheels with 195/65 dedicated snow tires. Tall and
skinny is the golden rule for snow traction. Just look
at any WRC car and you'll see.
I dare anyone to hang with me in the passing lane in a
snowstorm. The people who attempt to run 16" snows are
always in my rear view mirror.
It may be overkill but , I never miss a day of skiing
because of a measley 12" snow storm. I got my wifes A6
avant stuck once in 22"' because of ground clearance
problems not snow tire traction. It lifted the car of
the ground.

Someone mentioned snow tires...so I thought I'd ask. I
know it's only
September, 80 degrees and sunny, but...

I'm going to be shopping for snow tires and my chosen
brand (Nokia)
doesn't
offer a snow in a 225/50 16. The closest they get is a
215/55 or
225/55, and
these are too tall for my car (will rub against the
fender liner on
compression).

So I think my choices are to go with a 205/55 16 Nokia
(and live with
the
fact that they don't quite belong on an 8" wide
wheel), or go to a
different
tire (Michelin, Pirelli or Dunlop) that's available in
a 225/50 16
size.

I ran a set of 205/55 16 Nokias on my 16x8 wheels, and
while nothing
bad
happened, they looked like they really wanted to be on
a narrower
rim...

If I went with Nokia, I'm undecided between the NRW
and the Q. The NRW
will
give better dry road performance, while I believe the
Q will give
better
deep snow performance.

Also, if I go with the Q's I'll be able to do back to
back comparos
with the
NRWs on my wife's A6 :)

Thoughts appreciated. My tire guy typically has really
good pricing on
snow
tires through mid-October...
