Subject: [s-cars] snow tires

Having lived in the white mountains of NH for many
years I only buy one snow tire. Nokia Hakkapaletta. My
S6 avant, and many prior Audi quattros, runs 15" steel
wheels with 195/65 dedicated snow tires. Tall and
skinny is the golden rule for snow traction. Just look
at any WRC car and you'll see.
I dare anyone to hang with me in the passing lane in a
snowstorm. The people who attempt to run 16" snows are
always in my rear view mirror.
It may be overkill but , I never miss a day of skiing
because of a measley 12" snow storm. I got my wifes A6
avant stuck once in 22"' because of ground clearance
problems not snow tire traction. It lifted the car of
the ground.
Good Luck,

Someone mentioned snow tires...so I thought I'd ask. I
know it's only
September, 80 degrees and sunny, but...
I'm going to be shopping for snow tires and my chosen
brand (Nokia)
doesn't
offer a snow in a 225/50 16. The closest they get is a
215/55 or
225/55, and
these are too tall for my car (will rub against the
fender liner on
compression).
So I think my choices are to go with a 205/55 16 Nokia
(and live with
the
fact that they don't quite belong on an 8" wide
wheel), or go to a
different
tire (Michelin, Pirelli or Dunlop) that's available in
a 225/50 16
size.
I ran a set of 205/55 16 Nokias on my 16x8 wheels, and
while nothing
bad
happened, they looked like they really wanted to be on
a narrower
rim...
If I went with Nokia, I'm undecided between the NRW
and the Q. The NRW
will
give better dry road performance, while I believe the
Q will give
better
deep snow performance.
Also, if I go with the Q's I'll be able to do back to
back comparos
with the
NRWs on my wife's A6 :)
Thoughts appreciated. My tire guy typically has really
good pricing on
snow
tires through mid-October...
