OK,
The best guesses on why my car is smoking look toward the fuel injection
system. Possibly a leaky injector that drips excess fuel into the cylinder
overnight.
So I get a set of loaner injectors for my 93 S4. Thanks Bill M! I
installed them and got no improvement. In fact, I sprayed a bunch of carb
cleaner in and around the manifold (cleaning old grease) but I didn't
notices any additional smoke at startup. This leads me to believe that a
puddle of excess fuel is not the culprit as I knew (for the first time) that
there WAS a puddle in the intake manifold. I put my old injectors back in
and all is the same.
Until the next day (Sunday). I go to start the car and it requires a couple
more revolutions than normal. Once the motor is running, there is a
definite stumble, like a cylinder missing. This had never happened
before... After about 15 seconds, the motor smoothed out. The normal amount
of smoke poured from the tailpipe, and I was off. The smoking stops, as
normal. Over the next 10 or so minutes of driving the car stalled twice
coasting in to stop signs, and would continue to stall if I didn't keep the
revs up. After the 10 or so minutes, the car ran perfect again. Could the
stalling be from a overly rich condition?
Today, I go out to the car and as SOON as I start it, it starts puffing
smoke. This is abnormal because it typically takes 15 or so seconds for the
smoke to flow. There is no motor stumble this time. Smooth as normal.
What is different about today, other than the immediate smoke, is the amount
of smoke and for how long it lasted. There was MUCH more smoke. In fact,
there was a vapor trail like a plane's wing behind the car. The car stalled
at stop signs again. This smoking/stalling thing lasted about the same
amount of time as the day before, ~10 minutes. After that, the car ran
perfectly. Strong boost, solid idle. No stall.
So, now I am again thinking about the recently modded ECU. Could this be to
blame? How about an 02 sensor of a faulty cold start solenoid?
Today, I am going to start documenting the fuel mileage to see if it has
suffered. Also, I am going to try to pull codes, although the check engine
light has never come on............
All tips, suggestions are happily received!!!
Ed
