Well, after giving new meaning to "grinding gears" I've located a trans from
a lister in Canada for a very fair price. The ability to commit such a
serious boner (ground a hole in my bell housing) and come out allright
demonstrates how valuable this list is and how IMO it's the people who own
Audis that make them so enjoyable.
I have a couple of new questions: The trans is going to have to cross the
border dry. What's the best lube? I've heard Redline ML90 is good. Is the
original Audi stuff available? I've heard there is some additive also. Anyone
know what this is?
When I took the driveshafts off I marked their locations with a paint
marker. Obviously these won't match anything on the new trans. Are the
driveshafts balanced after the car is assembled? I've never heard of
vibration issues after trans replacement.
Without the unexpected and self-inflicted problems this job is not
impossible. It's a lot of work but with a low-profile trans jack I wouldn't
be afraid to do it again. Actually by the 3rd time of having the trans in and
out it doesn't seem too difficult at all. Lot of little things though. I
talked to Carolina clutch. Tom said they found out about the clearance issue
on the earlier cars and he would be happy to send me the correct pressure
plate if I need it. The trans I'm getting should fit over the one I have
though.
Many thanks to all who responded with help in finding a trans.
