What you are describing sounds like clearcoat failure. Audi had a problem
with this in the mid-80's but I haven't heard much about it on the later
cars. It typically occurs on the hood, roof, and trunk because of the
increased sun exposure on these surfaces.
I had this problem on my Zermatt Silver '86 5ktq. The "scratches" start out
as fine lines at random angles and get longer and deeper until you can
scrape the clearcoat off with your fingernail.
If your scratches are circular (swirls) or all in one direction, they are
likely caused by improper washing or waxing of the car. If they are at
random angles, it may be a sign of clearcoat failure.
Are you in a hot, sunny part of the world?

Hi all,
I am new to the list so be gentle. I have owned for the last 2 years a 94 S4
with Emerald Green paint. Over the last 4-5 months I have noticed some weird
scratch marks on the hood of the car and on the roof, but nowhere else. The
scratches are not deep. You can't catch a nail on them, but they are there.
I also noticed some rusting when you open the hood and look along the side
of the hood. I have seen several other posts about complaints about the red
paint S4's. What about the Emerald Green? Is this a factory problem? Are
there any others here with the same problem? I took the car today to a place
in CT that does probably the best paint work in the State and they gave me a
guesstimate of about 5 grand because it needs to be redone. Any help would
be apprecitaed. Thanks!
