That residue is what protects the plastic and rubber. I wash down the engine
in between applications to keep the metal objects clean so it all balances
out for me. I end up with a clean engine that looks new. BTW I have hot water
plumbed in my car that I use with a Y connector so I can wash my car and
engine in the summer and winter.
