The residue may help protect the plastic and rubber, but I've found that
the stuff attracts so much dust and dirt that it can make your car look
really dirty. I haven't had this problem nearly as much after switching
to 303 Protectant and Vinylex for the same use and both of these
products
seem to protect rubber and plastics quite well.

That residue is what protects the plastic and rubber. I wash down the
engine
in between applications to keep the metal objects clean so it all
balances
out for me. I end up with a clean engine that looks new. BTW I have hot
water
plumbed in my car that I use with a Y connector so I can wash my car and
engine in the summer and winter.
