Yes, the proliferation part is sad but true in today's American biz.
However I have a standing policy to never ever get suckered into going
through the voice menu, no matter how many times the stupid machine
chimes "I did not recognise your responce". Eventually a live person
will pick up the phone, with whom I will have a conversation. I
absolutely, positively, refuse to go through menus.
Sometimes, on a very rare occasion, the system would drop my call
because of my refusal to deal with a machine. Needless to say, these
people never do and never will see me as a customer.

I agree with this part wholeheartedly. That's why my first call always
goes to Rod at TPC. My second call goes to Don Rosen Audi in
Conchohocken, PA if either Rod does not have my part or I need it
urgently. Between those two I seldom need to make a third call at all.
