[s-cars] 93 S4 Test Drive Questions

Hi Gang,

I think the concept you are all describing in your own eloquent ways is what
used to be called "tip in". Any one else out there familiar with the term
"tip in"?

Tip in is the concept of changing the relationship between the first few
degrees of throttle peddle travel, and the amount the throttle plate opens.
The effect of this is to change the "feel" of the car when accelerating from
a standstill, or low engine speeds.

The brain tends to assume a linear relationship between degrees of throttle
application, and resulting acceleration, thus if the first few degrees of
throttle peddle movement unleash 60% of the available power, the perception
if that an enormous reserve of power is still untapped.

This is one of the first ergonomic concepts that was exploited by car
manufacturers to "fool" people into misjudging a cars performance potential.
Works great the first time someone (test) drives a particular car, but with
familiarity, the brain figures out that no, your family clunker cannot out
accelerate an S car!

Just one more proof that "Perception IS reality"!

Len

Chris,
from you earlier posts I gather that the car that you have test driven
had a 2.5 bar MTM chip. Try the 3 bar MTM chip with the OEM K24 turbo -
you'd be surprised at how little lag will remain.
Then you'll go into the RS2 turbo territory and some of the lag will
back, bringing with it some strong mid- and top end to compensate for
it.
