Hello,
I had the same noise. Last week I replaced the motor mounts (you can do
it in under 3 hours for both sides, you need a 15mm socket, a 17mm
socket, a couple of "knuckles" but not much else. Small hands help too
:-) Anyway, the knock was still there, if anything even more
pronounced.
So this Saturday I replaced the Tranny mounts. This DID solve the
problem completely. The old mounts still looked OK visually but were
clearly worn. The one on the turbo side of the engine (my passenger,
your driver) appeared to have an 8mm hex-head bolt that was
cross-threaded at the factory. (Someone else on the lsit had the same
issue) I proceeded to strip the head of the bolt and spend a lot of
time drilling, hammmering, etc before Jim Bonnet talked me into removing
the bracket that it is attached to on the trans (again, four 8mm hex
bolts that did not seem very tight at all). Once this was off, I was
able to drill the bolt out and replace it with a new one and mount
everything back together. Tools needed: 17mm wrench, 8mm heaxhead
socket, and a knuckle and various extensions help too. (Driver side
took under half an hour, passenger side one took a LOT longer in my
case, if bolt is OK, shouldn't take more than half an hour either once
the car is in the air and properly supported.
Be sure to support the engine and trans during these procedures.
Overall, it is not hard to do yourself, just be careful and take your
time.
Cause of knocking noise: If you look under the car, the exhaust pipes
pass over a bracket attached to the floorpan (big stamped metal assembly
about 2 feet long and 6" wide). On my car, one of the pipes is a bit
lower and closer to the bracket than the other wone. The worn mounts
appeared to let it hang too close and thus it banged against this.
Good luck,
Jim Klein

Subject: [s-cars] S4 Knocking
I have just purchased a UK S4 estate (Wagon). I know this list is based
in
the US but I wonder if anyone has experience a specific problem I am
encountering. Under acceleration and especially when taking a right hand
corner I get a knocking in the passenger footwell (RHD car). After
reading
many of the archives, I suspect either the engine mounts or the exhaust
mounts. (I hope it isn't the suspension). Has anyone experienced this
problem and if so what cured it.
Many thanks
