Make sure to stop at Multnomah Falls as you drive I-84 along the Columbia River Gorge. Its a good chance to get out and stretch the legs along the trail to the top.

Lots of good microbrews in Oregon. Surf to http://www.mcmenamins.com/ and http://www.pova.com/media/mbmedkit/mb_beer_press_release.html when you have some time.

The Tillamook Cheese factory in Tillamook, OR is a good stop if you like good cheddar cheese (have yet to find a "beddar cheddar" anywhere else!!!). Their ice cream is also quite good if the weather is warm!! http://www.tillamookcheese.com/visit/visithome.html

I'm not sure which route you have planned to get from Portland to the OR coast but I would suggest Hwy 26 all the way out to Cannon Beach. Stop at Camp 18 for a look at the old logging equipment or a famous cinnamon roll. http://travel.lycos.com/roadtrips/rtrips_details.asp?itemid=272
Tillamook then falls along the way going south on Hwy 101 from Cannon Beach.

If you like airplanes, the Spruce Goose resides in a museum with a LOT of other really nice planes, in McMinnville Oregon. (aka Hickminville)
www.sprucegoose.org/
You can either get there by going East on Hwy 18 from the coast, or you can use Hwy 18 as your route from Portland to the Coast, but then you miss Tillamook along with some of the nicer portion of the OR coast.

Make sure to have clam chowder at Mo's somewhere along the OR coast (there are several) http://moschowder.com/

Other coast favorites are

"Devil's Punchbowl" - Cool rock formation worth seeing... http://travel.lycos.com/roadtrips/rtrips_details.asp?itemid=1114

Oswald West State Park (aka Short Sands), a nice little beach that is a nice little leg-stretching walk to go see, hike out to Cape Falcon if you want a better leg-stretch! http://www.oregonstateparks.org/park_195.php

Hello,

Sorry to waste bandwidth but my girlfriend and I
are planning a trip from Calgary throught the
Pacific Northwest. We will likely go through the
Kootenays, Spokane, Columbia River to the coast
and then south on 101. Any recommendations, "must
see/avoid" (Ned's?), favorite roads, dining,
microbrews, REO warnings (I will have the V-1)?
