[s-cars] tranny noise? Argh...

Paul:

Funny thing that should happen to you... (well, not really). When we
were over your house last weekend I was talking to Bill (from Bristol,
with the silver 95.5 Avant) and it turns out both of us have the same
noise in our car, which is a slight rattle at 1800 rpm in 5th gear and
in Bill's case, also a rattle in 4th gear at around 2200-2300 rpm (yeah,
I know, you're always in 3rd gear at those speeds ;) While we were
talking about this in your driveway, Paul Prevost overheard our
conversation, chimed in that it's probably the driveshaft CV joint
needing lubrication. I also get that rattling noise (it's not really
that loud) in first gear from time to time when under load pulling into
my garage (my driveway is up a hill), so we may all very well be sharing
the same problem. Any thoughts from others? Or are we chasing ghosts?

Do you hear a noises that would coincide with those that we hear? Seems
like lubing the CV joint would be a good idear reagardless -- I'll be
happy to drop over and give it a drive this weekend. Gary in fact was
in my car when we were test driving, but being in the back seat the
noise was much less obvious to him than it was to the front seat
occupants.

Paul, this may be the driveshaft front CV. The grease disappears or
dries out from the heat of the exhaust pipes. Starts to make a vibrating
and maybe squeaking noise, under load, mostly in 1st gear. Mine started
at about 100k mikes. Fix is to drop the exhaust system, take it apart
and grease it. I had a shop do it, cause I didn't want to mess with the
exhaust. Cost about $100 IIRC. Hope that's your problem. If you want to
stop by soemtime, I'll take a listen. Give me a chance to drive your car
too :-).

Here's the circumstances:

1st gear "trolling" through my parking garage, I can hear an audible
drivetrain noise resonate around me. I also hear it when driving with
widows up, inside the car (which is why I'm just noticing it, just
starting
to do that here in CT). Happens when I put load onto the drivetrain.
Also
hear it 1st gear up my incline driveway (again, load related).
