Guys:
It is time for me to replace the rotors and pads on my 95.5 UrS6. What is the common approach to improving on the stock set-up without spending a bundle?
Many thanks in advance,
Edward

However, when I ordered the Eibach's from shox.com a couple of months ago,
I was asked which shocks I was using (Koni's) and it was implied that a
spacer would be needed with Bilstein's.

Lee;
Probably a leaking output shaft seal on one side or a leaking input shaft
seal. Check it out - you don't want to run the tranny low on oil. It's a
relatively easy fix on the output shafts, more complicated on the rear
shaft, and a real PITA on the input shaft.

Drip drip drip...I have some deposits on my garage floor under my S6. It's
dark and heavier than oil, and it builds up to 3/4 inch in height. I took a
look underneath, and it looks like the tranny is wet. Not doused, but a
light amount of oil on it. I can't tell where it's coming from, and the top
of the tranny has some of this oil on it.
Any thoughts on what this might be?

Ken;
Bolt it up, jack it up, and take a look at the wheel bolt holes on the inner
face of the hub. The end of the bolt should be flush with the hub face. If
the bolts are too short, the end will be inside the hub flange. The length
they are inset is how much longer they have to be for your rotor/wheel
setup.

All UrS4 and UrS6 ECUs sold in the US are functionally the same and the chips
are interchangeable between ECUs without any issues. In Europe there appears
to have been a version with a distributor which probably wouldn't work.
The MTM chips that are being referred to have the correct checksum. If taping
the ECU causes the car to stall it is apparent that there is a bad
connection, most likely this will be a none ideal socket replacement
procedure and or the MTM encryption board.

I got mine at Tool
Warehouse: http://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/shop/LIS-25000.html I tried
the cube tool and ended up having to use a large C-clamp and waterpump
pliers. The latter worked with effort, but the Lisle tool makes the job
really easy.

Be careful of buying new Eibach springs for the UrS4/S6 cars.
The reason I say this, is that -
A. Eibach isn't making them any more. Before the Group Purchase a year
or two ago, there supposedly were not any around to be found.
B. When the Group Purchase (GP) dealt directly with Eibach, they agreed
to produce one last batch of S-Car springs. They produced 20 or 30 sets
(or whatever) as were ordered. There was a mixup of European and North
American part numbers - and what they produced and shipped was really
springs for (I think) a 2WD Avant. Most of these springs got into the
hands of the GP buyers.
C. It turned out that the 1st type Eibach springs were too long to fit
correctly on the Bilstein Sport Shocks. Now, I gotta talk about them for
a moment.
D. Bilstein was making their Sport Shocks for different springs than the
Eibach Pro ???? springs. The nomenclature "Sport Shock" is talking about
a different part in the US than in Europe - so watch confusion here too.
E. Some people, including me, installed the 1st batch Eibach GP springs
wtih the US Bilstein Sport shocks. I had to machine another groove 'below'
the standard spring-seat snap ring groove, thus to lower the spring seat on
the shock body. The Euro produced Eibach GP 1st batch springs had a different
part number than what we thought we were aiming for.
F. After the smoke cleared in the air, it was figured that use of the
Eibach Pro springs with the US Bilstein Sport shocks required a spacer
about 1cm thick between the spring perch and the snap ring on the
shock body. When Eibach produced another group of GP springs to the
US part number spec for the UrS4/S6 cars, they also produced and shipped
the required spacers.
As far as I know, Eibach has never made springs for use with Bilstein
Sport shocks without spacers.
As I said up in the beginning, if someone is selling you new Eibach
springs for UrS4/S6 cars - they may be an early set of wrong-spec
springs or they may be a later set of correct spec springs. In either
case, they will not fit with the correct ride heigth on the rear of
UrS4/S6 cars without fiddling with the spring perch location.

[ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ]
I just had the V8 Torsen rear differential installed in my 95.5 S6 and have a
problem. I get a thunk like sound from the rear of the car only on full
throttle shifts at 7K rpms. I was thinking it may be one or all three
bushings that triangulate the rear diff. I didn't notice it before because
the car has EDL and that applies the rear brakes under 25MPH. The Torsen
works all the time and the differential may be rocking as the rear hunts for
grip. Any opinions welcome.
Thanks,
Robert

Pure guess?
If it's a manual tranny: Rear cam or crank seals on the engine; by the
time it gets to the tranny, it's been heated enough to thicken up with
the help of some road dust/dirt...
If it's an automatic: same as above or one of the tranny fluid cooler
lines.
Time to get in there with a some engine degreaser and then dry it all
off and then try to locate the source (expect it to be leaking only
under pressure, i.e. - engine running).
PS - other question -- what fluids are dropping if you measure them
day-to-day, over a period of a week?
Good Luck!

Hi all:
I'm a new owner of a 1997 S6 (Canadian-spec). I just took delivery today af=
ter purchasing it from an Audi dealer in Toronto and had it shipped by rail=
to me in Vancouver. It has an Audi Assured warranty on it until June 2004 =
or 144,000 km whichever comes first.
Many thanks to all who provided advice (Dave Forgie, Tom Black, Fred Munro,=
Randy Lewis) and especially Andrew Jackson (Toronto Coupe Quattro lister) =
who thoroughly checked it out and helped me make my decision and took over =
100 digital photos of it!
My inital driving impression is that its very smooth and extremely quiet ev=
en compared to my 90q20v. It has lots of power at the top end but the low e=
nd power is less than I expected. It takes a while for the boost to build u=
p, you really have to put your foot on it to make it go fast and casual thr=
ottle inputs results in mediocre acceleration. The steering is very over-as=
sisted especially at parking speeds compared to my 90q and the clutch is a =
little heavier. But other than that I love it and I'm sure I'll get used to=
the differences.
My immediate plans are to get a used OEM CD changer and euro headlights. Fu=
ture plans are a IA chip and BIRA / porsche brakes. In the next 2 or 3 mont=

I look forward to many years of enjoyment and technical support from the s-=

I was flipping through the MacWorld that I just got today, and this product
struck me as really cool.
I've heard of the products of having to wire in an iPod to your car. Well I
think this is a solution that everybody can appreciate.
It's an accessory for the iPod that allows it to transmit music from the iPod
onto any nearby FM radio. I'll let the description do it's work, but if you
want to know more, it's from http://www.everythingipod.com
Now...if I could only get myself an iPod.
"TransPod All-In-One Car Solution for iPod
Go mobile in style! Plays, charges and mounts iPod all in one unit. This is the
product that iPod owners have been asking for! The iPod is a must-have in the
car, but the current iPod car solutions create a mess of wires and leave the
iPod on the seat, the dash or in a cup holder. Now you don't have to sweat the
clutter. iPod sits right where you can access it, charges and plays through
your car stereo via the best FM transmitter around! We developed this little
beauty ourselves, to our specs; it is completely modular to fit any car, it's
compact and the design is elegant and seamless.
Here's how it works: Slide your iPod up into the cradle. The FireWire plug and
audio mini-plug engage the FireWire port and audio-out jack, providing a very
snug fit. Connect the modular auto charger stick to the back of the unit, plug
it into your standard 12v cigarette lighter and you are mounted, powered and
ready to roll.
Dial an unused frequency on your car stereo's FM dial, then dial the TransPod's
built-in FM Transmitter to match that frequency. Low, Medium and High FM
transmission settings provide the full FM spectrum to choose from.
LED indicators show charger and FM transmitter status. Two charger stick and a
dash mount options included in kit, giving you the flexibitily to position iPod
where you want it.

[ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ]
No less than a year ago I considered the 6 speed install a ridiculus and
useless waste of money only done by listers that were certifiable looneys.
(with all due respect) If they were beyond sick they would add a light
weight flywheel and stonger clutch.
Now, having spent about 15 of the last 36 hours on my own install, I have
decided that this is one very coolest of mods. It is tight and smoother than
the five speed. I went with bg syncro shift so perhaps that made some
difference.
With a little effort everything bolted right up and works perfect. Clutch
has a little slippage, but I think thats due to some needed bedding?
Many thanks to Chad, Elijah and everyone who shared their install
experiences.
And what better way to spend a day than trans. install, perfect test drive
and then come home to find your nicely packaged torsen diff. waiting on the
porch. (Thank you uncle Bob!)
Now thats sick!
