[s-cars] steering rack

Hi Lee;

The "standard" in rebuilt racks for the Type 44 is from Jorgen Auto
www.jorgenauto.com . Apparently they use stainless bushings in the rebuild
and their racks are more durable than the OEM units. They make a rack for
the '92-'94 100 model with or without Servotronic for around $235 - this
would probably work in your UrS, but check the FA for part numbers. I've
never used their products, but have seen many postings on the mother list
regarding them (mostly favourable) for the Type 44.

More bad news, if you're planning a leisurely afternoon with helpful
friends, beer, etc.
Flat rate is 10 hr + alignment. Mine was changed twice :-). Audi
warranty on first, parts warranty on second. Part list was $1550,
labor was only $550, including alignment, and total hyd fluid change.
This (and the brake booster) is the reason to keep the hyd fluid
changed, and to flush and replace when any work is done on the system.
Someone posted a link to Griffith ? rebuilders in Mich. as highly
regarded. I would expect a rebuild to be approx $500. The r&r is
possible, but a lot of work, and not one to just have the Bentley handy
"in case I need it". If I had mine out, I would sure jerk out that
piece of fuel line left from the second RF recall. Blau used to run a
rebuild operation also. I don't know if they still do since he closed
the repair shop and went parts only.
