[s-cars] Steering Servo Disable

I still believe pulling the servo relay just yields higher effort but no
improvement in actual road feel. Face it, the C4 chassis has numb steering!
IMHO, a much lighter grasp on the wheel works as well as pulling the relay (or
connector) while keeping the Mrs. much happier ;-)
But there is another possibility here. At what speed does the servo revert to
high effort? Is it possible that the "speed signal" isn't getting to the
servo? Can we change the speed at which the servo changes effort levels? I
know the "GALA" feature of my radio doesn't work and I suspect that's because
my car's speed signal is absent...

Being an S4 newbie and seeing this discussion yesterday, I pulled the
wire off the servo last night. WOW was this some improvement. I
expected to completely lose my power steering, but at a complete stop, I
still have a very mild amount of power steering, and the feel at road
speed is now hugely better. Maybe still not quite as good as BMW M3,
but close. I don't think I want to reattach it ever again, and don't
even see any benefit to wiring it to a switch for wifey, given that for
me it is perfect even when stopped. This will just make her less likely
to want to drive it.... <grin>

I didn't bother to disassemble the glove box, just pulled it off the
steering assembly down front. Is there some risk to this mod?? (I
think I'll put some tape over the connectors to keep things clean)

Things can't be this easy can they... Why didn't Audi do this??

Actually the '92 and '93 cars do have a relay, it's just not in the same
easily accessible place. The relay for the earlier cars is behind the
glove box.

For the older cars (like my '93) there is no relay. If you have a
relay, you can probably figure out which wire to break and run it to a

switch on the dashboard.

If you don't have a relay, you can disable the Servotronic (without
pulling the plug on the steering rack) as follows. I cut the
red/white wire on connector #9 on connector station 1. Connector
station 1 is under the driver's dash and the #9 connector is the
orange one. Cut the red/white wire going to the orange plug. To
switch the Servotronic on/off, you can connect a switch here and run
it to your dash. I just leave mine disconnected. Pulling the plug on

the PS does the same, except you're likely to get all kinds of dirt on

the contacts and it's not as neat as this method.
