It can certainly be done without the alignment tool. I suspect the mechanic
didn't bother to mark the original location of the bearing mounts and didn't
take note of the shims that were above the bearing flange, and then
subsequently lost one or more shims. If you lose the shims then the
driveshaft is going to be out of alignment which will lead to noise. The
alignment tool, or suitable facsimile thereof, keeps the two halves of the
driveshaft in the same plane, and would make the lack of shims above the
bearing flange evident. Whether the mechanic would know what to do with
that information is up for debate.
