I saw the exhaust turbine of one of these General Electric
turbosuperchargers when I was up at Oshkosh a few weeks back.
The turbine appeared to be of the axial flow impulse type, with
a lot of relatively small vanes on the periphery. I could just make
out several individual nozzles spaced around the other side of
the rotor to direct the exhaust at the vanes. So the tubine rotor
was large in diameter, but it was relatively thin compared to the
radial inflow turbines of today's turbochargers.
