Certainly sounds like the switch, Mike, but before you replace it, try
cleaning the connector to the switch. I use a spray Electric Motor
Cleaner (which is also excellent for removing exposed skin).  :-)

Cleaning connectors has resolved a few electrical issues on the S-Car.
Have done it twice on the backup switch. The switch is on the right
(passenger) side of the tranny -- easy to spot. Pull the connector, give
it a shot and it should work fine. You should probably pick up some
sealer for electrical connectors, too.
