[s-cars] Okay,
so my transmission is out. How do I know what I need to replace?

I spoke with a tech @ LuK (OEM supplier). He stated the dual mass should be
replaced whenever the clutch is replaced. Much like the brake rotors when
changing pads. He also said the dual mass cannot be resurfaced. All of the
dual mass flywheels I have worked with did have play beyond spec which I was
told to be a max of 10mm as measured at the outside circumference. I am
presently contemplating having a run of 10 lightweight flywheels made to
replace the dual mass flywheel which costs approx. $950 from the dealer.
These LWFW's will cost about $500. They are made of 6061 T6 aluminum with a
high carbon steel friction surface and a hardened steel ring gear. Weight is
yet to be determined. I want to find the best compromise between street use
(which is the most) and performance increase. Spec makes a clutch disc that
has springs rather than the stock solid hub. This would be the choice to use
for a single mass flywheel to help diminish chatter and engine harmonics.
I've tried to cover all the bases on a dual to single mass flywheel
conversion. Does anyone have anything to add that I haven't thought of? Spec
probably makes a clutch replacement kit as does Sachs which will include the
throwout bearing, clutch disc, pressure plate, and pinion bearing. Perhaps
an alignment tool as well. Sachs does include the tool.
Best,
Tim Leonard
