Dennis,
I guess this brings up something that I have to take issue with. Have you
seen how many innocent people have been killed recently in high speed chases
with the police, usually because the police are going after the really
hardened criminal....the traffic rules violator!!! Horror of horror if we
let him stay on the street without punishment! If the car is confirmed
stolen or if they know that there are criminals wanted for armed
robbery/murder/rape in the car that's about the only time I think these
chases are worth the risk. The problem is that these guys have too big of
an ego and can't let them go, it's all about "punishing" the wrong-doer no
matter what the risk to others around the chase. I never see the cops
brought up on manslaughter charges either. The department always protects
them.
I don't think an official "don't chase" policy is the answer, that would
just have everybody running and create another disaster. I think the cops
need to be taught to use better judgment AND need to be properly disciplined
when they don't, even if nobody gets hurt in that particular chase. If the
chase appears unwarranted and the cop participated then he should be
disciplined.

Pondering this further, our first response is "Oh crap now they can catch
us", but in reality, how many of us are truly high speed chase suspects? I
for
one will never try to outrun a cop even if I think I can. I feel if I'm
guilty
I'll face the music, and if not guilty I'll face the court.
They have plenty of other ways of tracking us down.
. After all- a rear wheel drive Camero in the mountains in the winter-
get serious! This was way overdue. Vail and Aspen have for many years used
Saabs
if I'm not mistaken.
