Some bearings just will not budge without the power of a hydraulic
press. It's truly a time and money saver if it will pull with a hand
puller. The real problem is installing the new bearing. A hammer and
large socket is not a replacement for pressing the new bearing in
place, and can easily result in damage and short bearing life. A
portable screw down press could do the job if it has sufficient power.
