My owner's manual says:
"SNOW CHAINS CAN BE USED ON THE FRONT WHEELS ONLY. Only use chains with
fine pitch links protruding no more than 1/2 inch (15mm) from tire tread and
side walls, including tensioner. Wheels must move freely in all steering
positions with chains mounted to prevent damage to body, axle, or brake
components." There's also a note that you can't use chains on the compact
spare.
When I was shopping for a 2002 A4 the owner's manual said the same thing,
but the sales person told me that chains were not allowed. Our Subaru has
basically the same instructions. I'd personally rather use them on the rear
to avoid the steering wheel shake, but that isn't what the manufacturers
want. I have checked the fit of my chains but have never had to use them
for real. My Artic Alpins have easily gotten me through everything I've hit
so far.
