I ran a set of radial tire chains
(http://www.scc-chain.com/NewFiles/Seasonal%20Pages/Traction%20Products/ch_p
roducts.html) on a Volvo 740 turbo wagon with Gislaved snows. The car was
mediocre in the snow with the snows, unbelievable with the chains. The ride
was a bit bumpy, but it felt like I could motor through anything.
I wouldn't worry too much about the difference in the shakes with regard to
mounting front or rear...it's a pretty uncomfortable ride either way and
you'll only have them on as long as you absolutely need them...they
certainly aren't something you'll drive for any distance on dry pavement
(Infinity ad notwithstanding!)
