Well, if it's anything like my '89 90Q, and it sounds like it is, once
two of those clips are broken (actually the tabs on the trim piece), it
just falls out every few hundred miles for maintenance.
Although I'd say, just give it a stronger tug, the trouble is figuring
out which direction you need to pull in. A lot of the ones like on my
car are missing a tab or two, probably from twisting or wrong-angle
pulling to remove them.
One of these days I'll stick it back on more convincingly with some 3M
strip-caulk...
