Bob:  I see you are from Canada (I am in Vancouver).  What you call a
"93" will actually be a "92" if is has wood trim and "quattro" in the
rear window defroster.  If this is true, there is a high probability
that the whine is from the pinion bearing in the transmission.  (Many
early build 92 spec cars had this problem - many likely had their
transmissions replaced under the original warranty). Even if it is a
real 93 (carbon fibre rather than wood trim), it may still be the pinion
bearing.  It is fixable, just expensive.
