Paul,
The alteration of the RPM of the miss may indicate that one of the
spark plugs is microscopically cracked internally (possibly a
manufacturing flaw, more likely material failure). Used to happen
regularly with my saturn for no discernible reason. So, KISS principle
being what it is, replace the plugs as the first step of the process
and see what happens.
