[s-cars] clicking noise - 1st Gear only

Assuming you are talking about a manual transmission here...
1. The Previous Owner (PO -- or the PO's teen) was not very nice with
the clutch and 1st gear, using it to train his/her friends on how to
drive a clutch (is this first? You mean I should have pushed in the
clutch first?)
2. You or the PO tended to down-shift back into first at too high a
rolling speed (say 15 mph) without rev'ing up the motor to compensate,
usually while quickly cycling the clutch, as standard method of
scrubbing off speed quickly.
3. Because of a bad shiftage linkage, first gear was difficult to
engage correctly and the PO often forced the shifter into 1st.
4. The PO's thought it was cool to burn out the tires and tended to
shift into first without the clutch to exagerate the effect (or popped
the clutch very fast; similar although not as intense an effect at the
gear interface).
Of course, there could be other mechanical reasons other than
gear-tooth bend-over/notching and relative positioning, but I'm
guessing option 2 is the originating cause of the problem (highest
probability).
Now let's start diagnosing the problem:
Q: if you put your fingertips on the shifter while in first gear with
the clutch depressed, standing still, then without putting any pressure
on the shifter, release the clutch and give gas (normal take-off, not
some power-launch), does the shifter move under your finger tips?
Best Wishes,
