I bought a Craftsman 5hp horizontal tank oil-less compressor about
4 years ago.  It's plugged in and 'on' all the time, but air leakage
is very slow so that it would cut on maybe every couple days.

Earlier this winter, the motor burned up, with huge amounts of smoke.
After filling a 3 car garage with dense smoke, then it tripped the
circuit breaker.  I still need to get a replacement motor.  After
I dig it out from under the workbench.  After I clear enough 'stuff'
out of the way to get to the workbench.  :-/

If I had (or have to) buy another compressor from scratch, I would
certainly buy an oil filled compressor model.
