direct drive oil-free compressors are really noisy. the belt-driven
compressors (which require oil for the pumps) are a lot quieter. they're
more expensive, but you'll be able to run the compressor without annoying
the neighbors and without waking people up if you wrench in the evening.
another alternative, which sears sells, is a two-stage compressor. i
have one. it's also more expensive than a direct drive, but it's pretty
quiet and is able to operate at higher pressures, effectively increasing
the capacity of your air tank. in operation, it's no louder than the
washing machine. you can actually talk to somebody while it's running
instead of having to shout at the top of your lungs.
