they became optional after '92?  that's news to me.  what came standard
on the '93 and '94 S4?  the S6 came with 17" avus rims, right?

i think the car could definitely use wider rubber.  not larger diameter,
but larger width.  a 255/40/16 would be nice, if that existed.  255/50/16
is as close as i can find, and it won't fit the car.  it's about an
inch larger in overall diameter than the stock 225/50/16.

the rim width isn't as much of an issue if the tire is designed for the
8" rim.  mustangs and camaros in SCCA american sedan (which are limited
to 16x8 rims by the rules) run tires as large as 275/45/16.  only hoosier
race tires come in that size, and they won't fit under the audi's
fenders anyway.

so if i'm sticking with the 16" rims, the widest i can go is probably
245, as i can get a 245/45/16 to fit.
