The subject does get beat to death, but every once in a while I learn a
little bit more about it. One of the things I finally realized is that the
best tire choice depends a lot on the conditions. There have been too many
posts saying that Hakkas are great in the snow that there must be something
to it. But I've also concluded once you leave the deep snow they might not
be the best. My situation here in Western Oregon is that I'm driving on wet
roads most of the winter, sometimes dry pavement, and occasionally black
ice. I take occasional trips over the mountain passes, which are pretty
well plowed so the snow is never more than a few inches deep. I've been
totally pleased with my Artic Alpins on 15" wheels. They're only slightly
more noisy that the Dunlop 8000 summer tires on wet and dry pavement, and
(go figure) actually handle better. They're pretty good on ice, and great
on the packed or 2-inch-deep snow. I did a few 0-60 runs on packed snow a
couple of days ago and could not get any wheel spin after leaving 1st gear.
And it was hard to get the ABS to kick in when nailing the brakes.
