Letterman (and Paul Newman) did drive one of the infamous Fordvo
conversions -- Take one boxy, old (rear drive) Volvo and drop in the
drivetrain from a trashed V8 Mustang and, viola, the ultimate sleeper
car. Some guy in the Northwest used to (maybe still does?) do these
conversions -- prided himself on using a wide assortment of junk yard
parts to make it all happen. I always thought this would be a kick --
pickup a ratty old Volvo wagon, drop in the Ford V8, supercharge the
sucker, slap on "Free Tibet" and "Shave the Whales" bumperstickers and
go out for some street racing fun.

Ohhh, do I even dare go here?  But it's not Friday yet!  NAC, but
OOOOOOOOOOKayy...

Yeah, same with a guy here in the NE, forget the name, Paul I believe
(ironic?).  He's up in Western MA / Holyoke area, great guy.  Back in my
supersilly hoosier slicked 1" sway bared socammed it idled like a popcorn
popper 242GT days, I met him @ Thompson Speedway.

Ford V8?  Voila, ultimate sleeper car???  Heh heh heh silly goose,
foggettaboudit.

His '83 245DL (wagon for you non Vulva'ers) had <gasp> an ohsosweet LT1
popped in there.  We joked that he should have a huge stuffed bear belted
into the rear facing 3rd seat while doing his runs (something about not
passing tech ;) ).  Ever see a Volvo wagon lay down a 60' doublepatch?  The
sight / sound of the double puffs coming out the twin pipes presented such a
mental paradox, and had the grandstands in laughter.

2nd year there my gearbox locked up (and later healed... scary), he offers
it for my 2nd heat.  WHOAMOMMA fun!!!  While my laptimes in that were a tick
under those in my GT, didn't matter, the sound feel look of that thing was
beyond ridicucrazy.

His son purportedly dropped an f'n FOUR-FIFTY-FOUR in his 242DL...  wish I
got to see that one...

For the uneducated / skeptical, go here, right column, "crazy Finns".  Damn.
