P,
While I might suggest you'd be comfortable "taking it in the rear", as you
so subtly put it, I won't. I mean, there is a different list to discuss
those preferences. :)
Ideal scenario is to measure tread depth and then find someone with a used
one with same depth. And then play the f'in lottery, 'cause if you can find
the right used tire, you'll DEFINITELY win the lottery too.
You don't want an egged sidewall tire on the car, and especially not on the
rear! Rear blowouts are worse at speed....as you have no ability to steer
the offending tire, so it steers you.
You also don't want to have tires of different rolling dimensions on a
quattro, like two new and two old. So the answer is....hit the lottery, or
bite the bullet and buy four new ones. There are some decent tires out there
for $100 a pop, but I just noticed you are a tough guy with 255/40's, so
you're SOL on 'el cheapo tires.

Um, er, I'm not the one named "Bruce" here chief! 8-)
Yeahyeahyeah, I know I know. I'm just still working my way through the
steps of DENIAL. F me.
Thanks to a number of you for your suggestions, laughter, etc. Pizzo's
offered me his old S03s, but depends on HOW worn they are. I'll likely just
call Tire Rack and have them shave me down one Conti to match, and light a
$200 bill and toss it out the window... on the way to City Hall of course,
where you may read about me going Postal on them...
