Won't argue that the UrS will wear the fronts out first, due to the
greater demands (steering, on top of accelerating, turning and braking).
I have done just that here in mostly sunny California and gotten greater
mileage out of the new/old set. Throw in the rain/hydroplaning factor,
though, and I'll stand by the rear mount recommendation. That way,
you're dealing with a little course correction, after passing the
standing water, and not a wayward rear end.
Most of the time, I'll lean towards scrapping a pair of not quite worn
tires in favor of new rubber all around. If staying with the same tire
for replacements, I'll keep the two with usuable tread around in the
garage for "spares", should a pothole eat one of the new tires, as in
Paulie's case. Not that I've ever had to use one -- this has resulted in
a stockpile of mostly worn tires in the old garage. Someday, I'll trot
them all out, paint them white and sell them as planters at the flea
market. :-)
