[s-cars] Coolant leak

I believe that I have found the leak. It appears to be the Engine
Coolant Shut-Off Valve, which is located on the left side of the Heater
Box. Because of its location, it is really difficult to actually see
the leak. I could only feel the coolant running down on the underside
of the hose. It is in-line on one of the two hoses that lead to the
Heater Core and they travel parallel and close to each other. I could
not feel any coolant above the Valve {i.e. between the valve and the
Heater Box}; therefore, I am assuming it is the Valve. I have inspected
the hoses for cracks and they appear to be good. Before, I order the
Valve, does anyone have BTDT with this scenario. Thanks to all who have
replied. I appreciate it very much.

I second Jack's experience. When mine went I thought it was a head
gasket.
Thank goodness it wasn't....just the fitting at the back of the head.

Dan,
I have had intermitent leaks in both of my 92 S4's. Both sprunk a leak
within a month of each other. The leak was coming from a plastic
gooseneck
for the heater hose at the back of the head. The leak was really hard
to
see becouse the head is hot and the coolant evaporates quickly. I tried
resealing top no avail. replacement gooseneck was the answer, $30 or so.
Replacement is not too bad, one allen bolt and a big gush of coolant.
Hope you find the leak!
Jack

Listeners: Today, while changing my oil/flushing the engine I noticed
coolant leaking down over the transmission. Prior to the leak
developing, I
had the car running at idle for about a 1/2 hour, with the temp. never
going
above normal. After shutting down the engine and draining the oil, is
when
I noticed the coolant leaking, but I could not see exactly from where it
was
coming, somewhere around the firewall. It leaked about 1 and 1/2 quarts
of
coolant and stopped. I filled the crankcase and started the car,
leaving it
run until the temp went back to normal. I shut the engine off and
started
looking for the leak, but there was no leak anywhere. I undercovered
the
compartment that houses the blower motor and saw that the drain hole at
the
bottom was wet, but that was it, i.e. no leak anywhere. I even checked
the
interior for wet carpets, but all were dry. The hoses were dry, as well
as
the other components. Started the engine and let it run for another 1/2
hour
still no leak. The air co and heat both work. Any BTDT or any ideas on
what caused this to happen and what could be leaking. Thanks in
advance.
