Personally, I'm biased towards removing the wheel, for a couple of reasons:

1 - the bike is lower, which makes it less likely to whack something
2 - the bike is lower, so there's less stress on the mounting points (I'll
let you mechanical engineers explain why)
3 - the fork mount is more stable than the wheel mount

It doesn't take that long to pop off a wheel...the only PITA is then
stashing the wheel somewhere. I stash mine in Campagnolo wheelbags and shove
them in on top of the wife's fine clothing.

Did have a tube explode in a hot car one day. Car was closed, sun was hot,
wheel was fully inflated. Then it wasn't. :(

I also have a bra-like device that i use to keep the bugs off the front of
the bike and the grease in the headset. Looks kinda weird - black spandex
etc.
