You really did luck out, painfull as it was (only to wallet and pride).
BTW, this can happen even when using the proper bolt and nut combo.

If you don't wiggle that ball joint up and down while tightening things up,
you can tighten it above or below the narrowed area of the ball joint,
though it won't be ovious until you wonder why your newly redone suspension
is making more noise than before (clunk).  It will appear that things are
right when they're not (BTDT -- though not with your experience).  Another
reason to always double check suspension repairs and use the proper mounting
hardware..
