Sorry, I've never heard of this problem from just washing the car.
Major problems of all sorts can result from steam cleaning or pressure
washing the engine compartment.  I would be looking for the source of
that much water into the engine compartment with the hood closed if it
was costing me a POS with every wash. Missing a firewall seal ?  No
problems driving in a rainstorm?
