Bill,
I'm at a loss of what red plug you are talking about. I'm thinking my
mechanism is different than yours. I was able to push the allen bolt in
(up) easily to release the motor while reindexing my sunroof. I'm sure the
red plug was/is the key to reindexing your sunroof (it's gotta be a
difference in model years).
Okay, so the red plug has allowed you to adjust your sunroof. I'm wondering
if it was difficult to pry out because of the tension on the plug. Does the
plug have gears on it or does it push a gear into place? Figuring out what
the plug does might be the key to putting it back.
The parts must be expensive. The cover for the sunroof mechanism costs
about $50. I wanted to replace mine because there are some scratches around
the sunroof knob. Now I think those scratches might just add to the
character of the car.

Ken,
Pushing up on the allen key did not disengage the
motor on my roof window mechanism. I pushed up with
fairly heavy force and it did not budge.
The owner's manual states that the red plug should be
removed prior to using the manual key. I had earlier
tried prying out the entire red plug and gave up
because it seemed to require too much force. Since
the hex socket is accessible without removing the
plug, I was unsure whether there is supposed to be an
inner plug that someone may have removed prior to my
purchase of the car.
I set up a work light when I attempted your
suggestion. With better light, it was apparent the
entire red plug is intended for removal as there are
distinct pry points that work with the supplied
hex-key/pry tool. With my second attempt, I was able
to get the plug out. The mechanism can now be easily
opened and closed easily with the manual crank. The
owner's manual states that the red plug has to be
reinstalled by a qualified Audi technician so I assume
it is the key to reindexing the mechanism to the zero
point. I tried putting it back in but it does not
want to go in more than half way. I am reluctant to
use more force, based on Paul's admonition (below)
that parts are VERY expensive.
I would be glad to reinstall the plug myself if
someone knows the proper technique!
Thanks again for the help,
Bill de Alva
